Sunday marks the wettest day in Portland since February | Local News

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) – It was the wettest day in the greater Portland area since mid-February.

By 5:00 p.m., most metropolitan areas on the west side have received three-quarters of an inch to 1.3 inches of total accumulation from this atmospheric flow. Areas on the east side of the subway area got closer to half an inch to an inch.

Lisa Rapalus works at Shorty’s Garden Center in Vancouver. They are one of the many kindergartens that stayed open during the pandemic and thrived as people stayed at home and turned their backyards into sanctuaries.

“It’s nice to get some rain on a day like today,” said Rapalus. “I have a few things in my own garden that I don’t have to water right now.”

Despite the rain this weekend, Portland is experiencing the driest spring and early summer in over 80 years.

“My weed started to die around May,” said customer Louie Staudinger. “Usually we wait until the end of June.”

These recent rains are unlikely to affect the ongoing drought in Oregon, but at this point everything is helping.

“I’m happy because I know that it will be really hot in the middle of the month and that will probably stay that way until September,” said Staudinger.

When that wet system goes away and the temperatures start rising again later this week, don’t forget to water the plants you have worked so hard on.

“You have to get out there and stick your finger in the dirt to see if it’s still wet,” said Rapalus. “If so, you probably don’t have to water it. When it is dry, you have to water it thoroughly. “

If you have plants that are new or aren’t doing well in the heat, try moving them on the east side of your house so they can still get sun but aren’t burned by the afternoon heat.
