Diana Perez to vie for Vancouver City Council open seat

A second candidate has thrown her hat for the Vancouver city council in the hopes of filling a vacant seat for an incumbent who does not stand for re-election.

Diana Perez will run for position 3 on the Vancouver City Council, currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Linda Glover. Glover announced on her Facebook page on Monday that she would not run after her term ended in November; Just a few hours later, Perez announced her candidacy.

“I want to help lead this great city in a purposeful and meaningful way, where everyone benefits and has the opportunity to thrive through a shared vision that is powerful and inclusive,” wrote Perez on Facebook. “As a city council member, I will help guide efforts to create guidelines that will enable an equitable and sustainable recovery from the pandemic.”

Perez has already tried to get a seat on the city council. In 2019, she was barely ousted from a seven-man pre-election race for a vacant council seat and missed the votes for the parliamentary elections by only a few percentage points. That seat eventually went to Sarah Fox. At the beginning of the year she had also made it to the final round of filling a vacant seat through an appointment process for the council, although the group ultimately elected Erik Paulsen.

Since then, Perez has continued to work in urban business and is a member of the Community Task Force for Council Representation. The group was tasked with developing strategies to make Vancouver’s government more diverse, a goal Glover emphasized in her announcement on Monday.

If elected, Perez would be the only black person on an all-white city council.

She joins another candidate who had already campaigned for Glover’s seat last week. Glen Yung, a local business owner, chairman of the neighborhood association and colleague on the Task Force Representation, will also run.
